Turkey Watershed

Description of Watershed

The total estimated area in the Turkey Watershed is 1,083,200 acres. This watershed is located in parts of Howard, Chickasaw, Winneshiek, Fayette, Clayton, Delaware and Dubuque counties in northeast Iowa.

The land uses in the Turkey Watershed consist of cropland, pastureland and forestland. The watershed area is a combination of Eastern Iowa Till Prairies and Northern Mississippi Valley Loess Hills resource areas. The topography ranges from nearly level and gently rolling to strongly sloping. The soils range from gently sloping glacial till prairie soils to strongly sloping loess forest soils.

There are an estimated 3,339 farms in the Turkey Watershed. Primary crops include corn, soybeans and alfalfa. Pastureland is used for beef and dairy cattle.

The third Resource concern for Tier II in this watershed is Wildlife Habitat.
