Tiling Farmable wetlands this fall can cost farmers USDA benefits. Paul Sweeney, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service Assistant State Conservationist for Operations, explains:

microphoneActuality (WMA, 886 KB, 00:43):
(Transcript) "With the wet spring and dry fall, many landowners will be tiling farm fields this fall. Farmers with uncertified wetland determinations dated before November 1996 need to contact their local USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service before tiling. Wetland determinations performed in the 1980s and early 90s were done using photo interpretation and are now invalid. Many of these areas are potentially farmed wetlands. If producers tile these farmed wetlands areas, they would be violating the Food Security Act and could lose USDA benefits."
