WITH DIESEL PRICES AT VERY HIGH LEVELS, TILLAGE AND FIELD OPERATION COSTS CAN CUT DEEPER INTO PRODUCER’S BOTTOM LINES. STATE AGRONOMIST BARB STEWART WITH USDA’S NATURAL RESOURCES CONSERVATION SERVICE SAYS:

(Transcript) “Producers can save energy and money by reducing the number and aggressiveness of fall tillage operations. The Conservation Technology Information Center indicates a producer can save up to 3-and-one-half-gallons of fuel per acre by going from conservation, or mulch till, to no-till. If diesel is selling for $2.15 a gallon, that’s fuel savings of $5.61 per acre.”

Announcer:

THERE ARE TOOLS AVAILABLE TO PRODUCERS TO COMPARE CROPPING SYSTEM PRICES.

(Transcript) "NRCS has developed an on-line energy estimator. This tool is designed to increase energy awareness in agriculture. It gives producers an idea of the size of fuel savings under different levels of tillage. To use the Energy Estimator, go to www.ia.nrcs.usda.gov, or visit your local NRCS office."
