reporter:

The Natural Resources Conservation Service urges farmers to protect their USDA benefits BY STAYING in compliance with their conservation plans. Producers that don’t risk loosing USDA benefits. Paul Sweeney, Assistant State Conservationist for Operations, is with NRCS.

microphoneSweeney (WAV, :46):

(Transcript) Staying in compliance with the law is required to qualify for a variety of USDA programs. Farmers and landowners receiving benefits while farming highly erodible land are required to follow a conservation plan. Failing to control erosion from concentrated water flows or lightly tilling or working soybean ground could go against their conservation plan and place a producer out of compliance. Disturbing wetlands and improperly applying manure may also jeopardize a producer’s USDA benefits. We don’t want to see that. Farmers that follow their conservation plans better protect their soil and wildlife habitat while offering the rest of us cleaner air and water.

reporter:

Producers can check their conservation plans and get help staying in conservation compliance at their local USDA Service Center.
