Decorah Dominates 2007 Iowa EnvirothonApril 24, 2007
Guthrie Center, Iowa – Decorah Unpickled Herring, a team of five Decorah high school students, won the 12th annual Iowa Envirothon contest held Monday, April 23, at Springbrook State Park. Decorah defeated fourteen other teams from across the state by winning three of the five areas of competition. The Marshalltown Hermnivores finished second, followed by Iowa City High. Muscatine FFA and Riceville FFA ended up fourth and fifth, respectively. Decorah goes on to compete at the national competition, the Canon Envirothon, held at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, NY, July 29-August 4. Students tested their knowledge in the areas of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, and wildlife at stations throughout Springbrook’s Conservation Education Center. Each team also gave an oral presentation on “Alternative/Renewable Energy.” In the individual categories, Decorah finished with the top score in forestry, soils and wildlife. Iowa City West had the highest score in aquatics, and for the second year in a row Iowa City High won the oral presentation. The Envirothon is North America’s largest high school environmental competition. The goals of the contest are to increase students’ knowledge and awareness of the interrelationship of our natural resources; promote environmental awareness and stewardship; develop students’ critical thinking, cooperative problem solving and decision-making skills; present balanced options for management of natural resources; and provide awareness of and accessibility to resource organizations offering assistance in environmental issues. The Iowa Envirothon is a program of the Conservation Districts of Iowa in cooperation with: Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Department of Natural Resources-IOWATER, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship-Division of Soil Conservation, Iowa FFA Association, USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service, Iowa Soybean Association, Iowa Pork Producers Association, Iowa Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society, Pheasants Forever, Inc., Professional Soil Classifiers of Iowa, Trees Forever, Canon USA, Inc., and many local soil and water conservation districts.
