Regional Small Farmers and Ranchers Conference Set for November in Des Moines

October 25, 2005

USDA officials expect farmers from more than ten states to attend a regional conference geared toward small and limited resource producers. The conference called, “Success Strategies for Small and Limited Resource Farmers and Ranchers Conference”, will be Nov. 1 and 2 at the Holiday Inn Airport Hotel in Des Moines.

The two-day conference will provide a venue for farmers, ranchers, public and private agricultural organizations, Tribal leaders and members, land grant universities, community-based organizations, and other stakeholders to identify, develop and promote successful risk management strategies.  Participants from Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Ohio, and Wisconsin are invited to attend.

“This conference will be a great opportunity for Iowa producers to network with farmers from other states,” said Tanya Meyer-Dideriksen, Outreach Coordinator for the USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service in Iowa. “It will be a chance to learn multiple ways to deal with common challenges and problems faced by limited resource and small farmers.”

Leading specialists will speak on various topics including livestock production, specialty crop production, marketing networks, leadership techniques, estate planning, legal risks, financial management, organic support systems, crop insurance and other strategies farmers and ranchers can utilize to remain economically viable in a rapidly changing agricultural environment.  A computer lab will be available to learn about websites that offer assistance to small and limited resource producers.
