School Children, Dignitaries to Celebrate Earth Day in AmesApril 15, 2005 Ames, Iowa--Merlin Bartz, Regional Assistant Chief - Central for USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, local dignitaries and school children from St. Cecilia Catholic School in Ames, will celebrate Earth Day, April 22, at 10 a.m. at the Ada Hayden Heritage Park, 5205 Grand Avenue, Ames. The groups will commemorate Earth Day by seeing how wetlands and partnerships can improve the environment. Media availability begins at 9:40. Speeches begin at 10:00 a.m. At 10:30 a.m., the dignitaries and others will team up with children from Mrs. Tallman’s 4th grade class to stencil storm drains, reminding residents that what goes into the drain will end up in the Ada Hayden lakes. Because water contained in the 130-acre lake within the Ada Haden Heritage Park is a potential water supply for more than 50,000 central Iowa residents, maintenance of high water quality in the lake is essential. The City of Ames, NRCS and the many partners on this project have installed a number of conservation practices, including wetlands to filter water entering the lake and by treating upland farmland to reduce soil erosion. Soil loss within the watershed has been reduced as much as 71.7 tons per acre per year. The picturesque Ada Hayden Heritage Park is on the north side of Ames (see attached map) between a new housing development and productive farm land. It features native prairie, walking paths, fishing, picnicking and play areas. --NRCS—
