Trees Forever, Agren, Inc. Receive Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG)

August 15, 2005

Des Moines, IA— State Conservationist Rick Van Klaveren, of USDA’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), announced today Trees Forever and Agren, Inc. are receiving Conservation Innovation Grants (CIG) from NRCS.

CIG, part of the 2002 Farm Bill, are awarded to stimulate the development and adoption of innovative conservation approaches and technologies. The technology-transfer program helps leverage Federal investment because government dollars must be matched at the local level. The grant is open to public and private entities as well as individuals.

The Iowa CIG grants are:

  • Trees Forever--$51,000 to provide technical and cost share assistance to organic producers to establish agroforestry buffers for organic crops.
  • Agren, Inc.--$75,000 to develop and demonstrate a grassbank system in the Loess Hills to restore lands suffering effects of overgrazing.

“These innovative ideas, put to work with help from the Conservation Innovation Grants program, will benefit our staff and customers by helping us provide more leading edge solutions to today’s conservation issues and challenges,” said Van Klaveren.  “And, ultimately, it is the people of Iowa who will benefit from the cleaner water, air, and more efficient food production produced, in part, by the technology developed and implemented through these Iowa Conservation Innovation Grants.
