Fifteen Teams to Compete in 2005 Iowa Envirothon Contest

April 11, 2005

Fifteen teams from across Iowa have advanced to the 10th annual Iowa Envirothon Contest to be held April 18 at Springbrook State Park near Guthrie Center.

Competing students will test their knowledge in the areas of aquatic ecology, forestry, wildlife, soils, and current environmental issues at several stations throughout Springbrook’s Education Center. Each team will also make an oral presentation on managing cultural landscapes.

Teams consist of five members, enrolled in grades 9-12. Decorah, Marshalltown and Winterset qualified two teams apiece for this year’s state competition. Other high schools qualifying include: Earlham, Graettinger/Terril, Malvern, Van Buren, Iowa City West, Muscatine, Bellevue, Griswold, and Northwood Kennsett.

Awards will be given to teams finishing first in each of the following categories: overall winner, aquatics, forestry, soils, wildlife and oral presentation. The overall winning team will represent Iowa at the national competition, the Canon Envirothon, to be held at Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield, Mo., July 18-24, 2005.

Marshalltown won last year’s Iowa Envirothon, with two teams from Decorah finishing tied for second place.

The Envirothon is North America’s largest high school environmental competition. The goals of the contest are to increase students’ knowledge and awareness of the interrelationship of our natural resources, promote environmental awareness and stewardship, develop students’ critical thinking, cooperative problem solving and decision-making skills, present balanced options for management of natural resources, and provide awareness of and accessibility to resource organizations offering assistance in environmental issues.

Agencies and organizations that sponsor the Iowa Envirothon include the Conservation Districts of Iowa, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Corn Growers Association, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship-Division of Soil Conservation, Iowa FFA Association, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Iowa Pork Producers, Iowa Soybean Association, Pheasants Forever Inc, and the Iowa Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society.
