Avian Influenza

Avian Influenza (AI) is a potentially devastating disease that is spreading rapidly around the globe. (View the spread in poultry and human populations here.)

In USDA the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is the lead agency, but NRCS employees have a role in containing AI, too. Presentations from recent NRCS leadership meetings (see below) giving information on the disease are available here for your review.

This page contains general information gathered by state, national and international organizations that will be useful to you in becoming aware of how this disease operates. These sites can arm you with information on the risks and possible protections you can take for you and your family.

Additionally, this page contains technical NRCS information on biosecurity to guide NRCS employees in work on farms and wild areas, as well as soils and engineering guidelines on composting and disposing of dead animals.
