Marshalltown Wins 9th Annual Iowa Envirothon Contest

2004 Envirothon PhotoFor the second consecutive year Marshalltown High School won the Iowa Envirothon contest. This year’s Envirothon was held Monday, April 26, at Springbrook State Park near Guthrie Center.

Marshalltown defeated sixteen other teams from across the state, including the Decorah Raccoons and Decorah Whitetails, who tied for second. Earlham FFA ended fourth, followed by Iowa City High in fifth place. Marshalltown goes on to compete at the national competition, the Canon Envirothon, held at Wesleyan College in Buckhannon, West Virginia, July 26 – Aug. 1, 2004.

Students tested their knowledge in the areas of aquatic ecology, forestry, soils, wildlife and current environmental issues at stations throughout Springbrook’s Education Center. Each team also gave an oral presentation on “Natural Resource Management in Urban Environments.”

Maple Valley FFA earned the top score in the Aquatics category. Muscatine FFA II took home first place in Forestry. Earlham FFA won the Soils competition. Iowa City High captured first place in Wildlife, and the Decorah Raccoons won the Oral Presentation.

The Iowa Envirothon is sponsored by the Conservation Districts of Iowa and their partners. The steering committee for this program consists of representatives from Conservation Districts of Iowa, Iowa Farm Bureau, Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Iowa Department of Education, Iowa Department of Agriculture and Land Stewardship-Division of Soil Conservation, USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service, Iowa Pork Producers, Iowa Soybean, Iowa Corn Growers Association, the Iowa Chapter of the Soil and Water Conservation Society and several Soil and Water Conservation Districts.

The Conservation Districts of Iowa was awarded Governor Thomas J. Vilsack’s “Above and Beyond” award Tuesday, April 27, for its efforts with the Iowa Envirothon. This award honors groups and individuals who have made an outstanding contribution toward improving the well-being of Iowa children.
