NRCS Announces Grassland Reserve Program Signup

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has nearly $983,000 available for Iowa landowners who sign up for the Grassland Reserve Program (GRP) by July 10. To participate in the GRP, landowners must have a grazing management plan. Landowners who have their GRP applications accepted can enroll their land into a permanent easement, or they can receive annual, per-acre payments in exchange for their agreement to keep the land as grassland for 10, 15 or 20 years.

Vilsack Visits Iowa to Announce Recovery Funds

USDA Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack was back in Iowa Wednesday, June 10, to announce Recovery Act funding for floodplain easements. State Conservationist Rich Sims and Assistant State Conservationist Bruce Trautman were among a group who joined Vilsack in Louisa County, where seven applicants were selected to receive Recovery Act funds in the Lower Iowa River Watershed.

Bear Creek Watershed, 41 Floodplain Easement Applications Selected for Funding

A Total of 41 Iowa applications have been selected in the first national sign-up for floodplain easements under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) of 2009. In Addition, the Bear Creek Watershed in northeast Iowa will receive $755,000 to improve water quality, increase water supply, decrease soil erosion, and improve fish and wildlife habitat while creating jobs as part of the ARRA of 2009.
