Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program Ranking Cutoff Set for February 12

Des Moines, IA, Jan. 25 — To be considered for the first round of selections through the Wildlife Habitat Incentives Program (WHIP) in fiscal year 2010, Iowa producers need to apply at their local USDA-Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) office by Feb. 12.

High Tunnel in Iowa

USDA to Launch High Tunnel Pilot Study

Agriculture Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan recently announced a new pilot project under the 'Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food' initiative for farmers to establish high tunnels - also known as hoop houses - to increase the availability of locally grown produce in a conservation-friendly way.

Mississippi River

Five Iowa Watersheds to Take Part in Mississippi River Basin Initiative

Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced five Iowa watersheds, known as Focus Areas, were selected to participate in a new initiative to improve water quality and the overall health of the Mississippi River Basin. These watersheds are the Boone, Maquoketa, North Raccoon, Upper Cedar (shared with Minnesota) and Lower Grand (shared with Missouri.) (A very small portion of northeast Iowa is also part of the Initiative through the Root watershed in Minnesota.)
